History of France's currency
The franc was introduced in 1795 during the French Revolution, replacing the livre. Napoleon stabilized it as the franc germinal (1803), which survived until WWI with minor fluctuations. Interwar instability and WWII devastation forced the 1960 creation of the 'nouveau franc' (100 old francs = 1 new). The franc joined the euro at 6.55957:1 in 2002. Modern France inflation closely tracks the eurozone average.
