How the money actually works

People expect the number to tick up after a goal. It is more honest to say it ticks up after a result. A goal matters only when it decides whether a team goes through. The payout is tied to the stage a team reaches, so the moment a team is mathematically into the next round, its money is locked in.

Two pots feed the totals above. First, every nation that qualified is guaranteed $12,500,000: ten million for getting there and two and a half million for preparation. Nobody goes home with nothing. Second, there is performance money, paid by how far you go.

Stage reachedPerformance moneyTotal with guarantee
Group stage exit$9,000,000$21,500,000
Round of 32$11,000,000$23,500,000
Round of 16$15,000,000$27,500,000
Quarter-final$19,000,000$31,500,000
Fourth place$27,000,000$39,500,000
Third place$29,000,000$41,500,000
Runner-up$33,000,000$45,500,000
Champion$50,000,000$62,500,000

Why clubs cash in too

A club does not need one of its players to lift the trophy to make money here. Through the FIFA Club Benefits Programme, a club is paid about $5,000 per day for every player it releases, counted from late May until the day after that player's nation is knocked out. So a squad full of internationals who all go deep is a small fortune. The total club pot for 2026 reached $355 million, up roughly 70 percent on Qatar 2022. The club ranking above is a starter sample of marquee names, and it grows automatically as those players' nations advance.

But what is $50 million really worth?

A record cheque sounds enormous, and it is. Still, prize money has a way of shrinking once you put it next to the past. To see what these numbers mean in real terms, run them through our tools.

Questions people ask

Does the prize money really change after every goal?

Not exactly. A goal only moves the money if it changes which round a team reaches. FIFA pays by result, so the totals on this page jump when a match is settled or a team advances, not on every shot.

How much does the 2026 World Cup winner get?

The champion earns $50 million in performance prize money. Add the $12.5 million every qualified nation receives and the winner walks away with about $62.5 million before any extra contributions.

Why do clubs get paid?

Under the FIFA Club Benefits Programme, clubs are paid a daily rate for every player they release to a national team. The longer a player stays at the tournament, the more his club collects.

Sources and method

Prize figures follow FIFA's April 2026 announcement of the $871 million distribution and the Club Benefits Programme release. Club benefit amounts use the published $5,000 per player per day rate; FIFA confirms final figures only after the tournament, so club totals here are good-faith estimates. Team statuses are checked against live results and updated as the bracket plays out. Read more in our methodology and data sources.
