Money is a 5,000-year-old technology for moving value across time, and it leaks. The US dollar has lost about 87% of its purchasing power since 1971 (BLS CPI-U). Act I · Before 3000 BCE

Before Money

Trade is older than money. For most of human history, to swap grain for a goat you had to find someone with a goat who wanted grain, at the same moment, in the same place. Economists call it the double coincidence of wants, a phrase coined by W. S. Jevons in 1875. It is why pure barter never scaled past the village.

Communities fixed it by agreeing on things everyone would take: cattle, sacks of barley, and across Africa and Asia the small glossy shell of a sea snail. Cowries worked because they were durable, portable, hard to fake, and impossible to grow in a field. They stayed money in parts of West Africa into the 20th century.

Act II · Mesopotamia, ~3000 BCE

The First Ledgers

The first money we can read was not a coin. It was a debt. Sumerian temples pressed grain loans and silver obligations into wet clay five thousand years ago, more than two millennia before anyone minted anything. Writing itself likely began as accounting.

The unit was the silver shekel, about 8.3 grams, and mostly a unit of account: farmers rarely touched the metal. Prices, wages and fines were written in it. By roughly 1754 BCE the Code of Hammurabi fixed them in law: a hired field worker earned 8 gur of grain a year, and surgeons had a price list enforced with penalties.

Act III · Lydia, ~600 BCE

The First Coin

In western Anatolia, the kingdom of Lydia struck lumps of electrum, a natural gold-silver alloy panned from the river Pactolus, stamped with a roaring lion. Weight and purity were now guaranteed by the state, not tested by every merchant with a scale. That one change cut the cost of every trade that followed.

A full stater was serious money, roughly a month of a soldier's pay by rough estimate, which is why the mint also struck fractions down to 1/96th for daily trade. Within a century the idea reached every Greek city that could afford a die. Croesus, the last Lydian king, became a byword for wealth.

Act IV · Rome, 1–301 CE

Rome Debases

The denarius paid the legions, and the legions were expensive. Under Augustus it was about 98% silver. Nero shaved it to roughly 93% in 64 CE to cover a budget hole, and every crisis after reached for the same tool. By the 260s the "silver" denarius was a bronze disc with a wash that wore off in a pocket.

Prices answered. Rome had the first well-documented sustained inflation in history, and in 301 CE Diocletian responded the way governments still do: his Edict on Maximum Prices fixed over a thousand goods across the empire, on pain of death. It failed within a generation. Goods vanished from markets instead.

Act V · China, ~1000 CE

Paper Promises

Sichuan merchants had a weight problem. The province used iron coins, and buying a bolt of silk could take kilograms of them. The fix: deposit the coins, trade the receipts. By the early 11th century the Song state took over and issued jiaozi, the first government paper money, backed by reserves and printed in counterfeit-resistant designs.

It worked until it didn't. Later dynasties found that paper obeys the printer, not the reserve. Under the Yuan, over-issue drove prices up until the notes were effectively repudiated. Marco Polo, visiting in the 1270s, gave an astonished chapter to money made from mulberry bark that the Khan could create at will. Europe read it as fantasy. It was a preview.

Act VI · 1700–1914

The Golden Anchor

For about two centuries, money mostly stopped leaking. Britain fixed the pound to gold, world trade fixed itself to the pound, and prices went flat for generations. In the RealWorth UK dataset, cumulative price drift from 1750 to 1900 is roughly 48% across 150 years. Not per year. Total.

A sovereign your grandfather saved bought your grandson about the same dinner. Wars bent the line (Napoleon is the bump near 1800), but gravity pulled it back. Deflation was as common as inflation. The chart below is drawn from the same dataset that powers our calculators: one pound, tracked from 1750.

Act VII · 1914–1971

Everything Breaks

The anchor did not survive the 20th century. In August 1914 the great powers suspended gold convertibility to print for war, promising to return. Germany showed what the press does when it never stops. A loaf of bread that cost half a mark in 1918 cost 250 marks in January 1923 and roughly 200 billion by that November. Workers were paid twice a day and ran to the shops at lunch.

Bretton Woods (1944) rebuilt a paler anchor: currencies pegged to the dollar, the dollar pegged to gold at $35 an ounce. It lasted 27 years. On August 15, 1971, Richard Nixon suspended convertibility in a Sunday-evening broadcast. It was announced as temporary. It is now in its sixth decade.

The Age of Melt

Since 1971 every major currency floats on trust alone, and all of them melt. Slowly in good decades, fast in bad ones, always one direction. The dollar has lost about 87% of its purchasing power since the Nixon broadcast: you need about $758 today to buy what $100 bought then. The pound is down 99.6% from 1750; £1 of Georgian money takes about £264 now.

Types of Money

The nine acts above run in order, start to finish. This wing is arranged the other way, by kind: what money has actually been made of, and why each form replaced the last.

Money before coins

Money is whatever a community agrees to accept. Long before metal discs, that meant shells, salt, cloth, cattle, beads and furs.

Anthropologists have catalogued hundreds of these currencies. What is striking is not how strange they look but how consistent they are underneath. Almost all of them are portable, hard to fake, durable enough to survive handling, and instantly recognisable. Those four properties are the job description for money, and they were being met thousands of years before anyone struck a coin.

Some of these currencies were also social instruments. On Yap, giant limestone discs called rai settled marriages and alliances rather than daily shopping. Value sat in a shared public memory of who owned which stone, not in moving the stone at all. In parts of West Africa cowrie shells stayed in use into the twentieth century, and in the Atlantic fur trade the beaver pelt became a unit of account: goods were priced in "made beaver" long after most transactions stopped involving actual fur.

The lesson carries into the digital era. What matters is not the substance but the agreement.

The first coins

Around the 7th century BCE, three separate traditions began stamping metal to a standard: Lydian and Greek, Indian, and Chinese.

The Lydian innovation was not metal money, which already existed as weighed bullion. It was the guarantee. A stamp certified weight and purity so that merchants no longer had to test every payment. Greek cities adopted the idea within a century, and by the classical period nearly every polis from southern France to the Black Sea minted its own.

India developed punch-marked silver in the same era, and China went a different way entirely, casting bronze in the shape of the tools it replaced: spades and knives, later the round coin with a square hole that would define East Asian money for two thousand years.

Rome adopted coinage from the Greeks in the 3rd century BCE and built the first thoroughly monetised society, where ordinary people used coins for ordinary purchases. That created enormous demand, and Roman mints answered with a visual language of portraits, deities and abbreviations that is still legible on money today.

After Rome

When the western empire fell, long-distance trade contracted and coinage went with it. What came back was silver, and a counting system Britain kept until 1971.

Gold coinage thinned to a few denominations in the west, while the Eastern Roman Empire kept a stable gold solidus that traded across three continents. Then the Caliphate minted its own gold dinar and silver dirham, which became the standard trade money from Spain to Central Asia.

In western Europe recovery arrived in silver. Charlemagne standardised a system around the silver penny, reviving the Roman denarius as the denier: 12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound. That is where the British pound comes from, and why it was written £sd. Britain used that system for over a thousand years and only decimalised in February 1971, six months before the Nixon shock ended gold convertibility.

So the pound in our UK dataset, running back to 1750, spends most of its life denominated in a scheme Charlemagne set up.

How coins got made

For two thousand years a coin was a struck by hand with a hammer. Three waves of machinery changed that, and changed what a coin could be.

Ancient and medieval coins were made by placing a blank between two engraved dies and hitting the top one. It was fast in skilled hands and endlessly variable: no two coins came out quite alike, edges were irregular, and strikes were often off-centre.

From the 16th century, screw presses and roller presses brought consistent pressure and true circles. That mattered for more than looks. Irregular edges invited clipping, the practice of shaving metal from coins and spending them at face value. Milled edges, those fine grooves still on many coins today, exist to make clipping visible.

Steam presses in the early 19th century industrialised the process, and coins became near-identical copies produced by the million. The same technology made large silver trade coins practical, and the Spanish dollar and its successors circulated worldwide, setting the pattern that most national currencies still follow.

Promises on paper

Paper money began as a receipt. It became the mainstay of the world economy only in the last 150 years.

Tang-dynasty China had 'flying cash' from the 8th century: transfer certificates that let merchants move value without carrying coin. True circulating government paper came later, with Song-dynasty jiaozi in the early 11th century. Europe waited until 1661, when Sweden issued its first banknotes for the same reason China had, because its copper coinage was too heavy to use.

Two distinct things are both called paper money. A draft is a receipt for value you already hold. A bill is a promise to pay in something else, historically gold or silver coin. Almost all paper before the mid-20th century named where and in what it could be redeemed, because the paper itself was worth nothing.

Modern notes make no such promise. They are backed by the issuing government's acceptance of them, and by everyone's expectation that everyone else will accept them too. That shift, from claim to convention, is the single largest change in the history of money, and it is what makes the melt on this page possible.

Money in a pinch

When official money vanishes, people make their own. Emergency currency is a reliable symptom of a monetary system under stress.

Coins disappear from circulation for a simple reason: when the metal in a coin is worth more than its face value, people melt or hoard it. Wars, bank failures and hyperinflation all trigger it. What follows is local improvisation, and it appears in every country in this dataset.

Germany produced the most famous examples. Notgeld, literally emergency money, was issued by towns, companies and even churches during and after the First World War, on paper, on leather, on linen, and eventually in denominations of a billion marks. Some towns printed notes attractive enough that collectors bought them, which is how a few municipalities quietly turned a currency crisis into revenue.

The pattern is not confined to catastrophe. During the 1930s banking crisis, American merchants' associations issued scrip so that shops could keep trading through bank closures, and one Washington town printed its currency on wood veneer, the local product. In every case the same thing is happening: the community rebuilding a medium of exchange because the official one has failed.

Back to the ledger

Most money today has no physical form at all. It is an entry in a database, which is what money was when it started.

In the UK, notes and coin account for roughly 3% of the money supply. The rest exists as bank deposits, created when commercial banks make loans. That is not a metaphor: the loan and the deposit come into being together, which is why the Bank of England describes the process as loans creating deposits rather than the other way round.

Card networks, mobile wallets and instant transfer systems moved everyday payments onto that layer, and more than a hundred central banks are now researching or piloting their own digital currencies. Private cryptocurrencies pushed in a different direction, replacing the trusted institution with a public ledger that anyone can audit.

Which brings the story back to where it began. Five thousand years ago, money in Mesopotamia was a record of who owed what, pressed into clay. After shells, coins and paper, money is once again mostly a ledger. The container keeps changing. The question underneath does not.

A general, sustained fall in prices. Sounds good, but can freeze spending and deepen debt.

Hyperinflation

Inflation so fast that money loses value by the day or hour and people abandon it.

Purchasing power

What a unit of money can actually buy. It falls as inflation rises.

Real vs nominal

Nominal is the face number; real is that number after adjusting for inflation.

Gold standard

A system that ties a currency to a fixed weight of gold, limiting how much can be printed.

Fractional reserve banking

Banks keep only a fraction of deposits on hand and lend the rest, creating new money as they do.

Central bank

The institution that manages a nation's money and, today, usually targets low, steady inflation.

Inflation target

The rate of inflation a central bank aims for, commonly about 2% a year.
